The Cost of Not Knowing

A Reflection on Health and Money

I didn’t know I had lipedema until I was 48 years old.

Forty-eight years into my life.

Forty-eight years of trying to “fix” something without fully understanding what I was dealing with.

When I finally learned what lipedema was — that it’s progressive, that the fat cells behave differently, that inflammation isn’t simply about willpower — something shifted.

The shame softened.

The questions changed.

The internal dialogue became kinder.

Education provided clarity.

And clarity reframed everything.

I couldn’t help but wonder:

What would have been different if I had known sooner?

The Quiet Cost of Not Knowing

Lipedema progresses quietly.

It doesn’t announce itself loudly.

It doesn’t demand attention at first.

It layers slowly — inflammation, pressure, heaviness.

And when you don’t know what you’re dealing with, you compensate.

You try harder.

You blame yourself.

You assume you just need more discipline.

I’ve realized money behaves the same way.

Growing Up Without the Language

I didn’t grow up learning structured money management.

I grew up in a low-income household where survival, not strategy, was the focus.

There wasn’t language around allocations.

There weren’t conversations about margin.

There wasn’t education around long-term planning.

You do what you can with what you know.

But what we don’t know still shapes what we carry.

Financial Inflammation

In business and in families, cash flow problems rarely start in crisis.

They start subtly.

Spending without structure.

Operating from whatever is in the bank.

Normalizing credit card float.

Avoiding the numbers because they feel overwhelming.

Just like lipedema, financial strain progresses when left unnamed.

It adds pressure.

It adds stress.

It creates heaviness that lingers — even when outwardly everything looks “fine.”

And just like with health, many people assume it’s a character flaw.

It’s usually not.

It’s an education gap.

The Power of Naming the Problem

The moment I learned the word lipedema, I felt relief.

Not because it solved everything overnight — but because I finally understood what I was stewarding

The same thing happens when someone learns foundational cash flow principles.

When business owners understand Profit First allocations…

When families learn intentional account structures through Money Habits…

When someone sees clearly how cash actually moves…

The shame decreases.

Clarity reduces panic.

Structure reduces pressure.

Education changes trajectories.

I often think:

How many businesses would operate differently if they understood cash flow earlier?

How many families would move differently if they had language around margin and intentional spending sooner?

What is the long-term cost of not knowing?

Stewardship Starts With Awareness

Neither health nor money require perfection.

They require awareness.

They require structure.

They require ongoing stewardship.

And both become significantly harder — and more expensive — when education is delayed.

I can’t go back and learn about lipedema at 18.

But I can choose awareness now.

And I can offer education to others so they don’t have to wait decades to understand what they’re carrying.

That’s why I share foundational financial principles freely — because sometimes one shift in understanding prevents years of unnecessary pressure.

A Reflection for You

Maybe your story isn’t lipedema.

But is there something in your life you learned later than you wish you had?

Something that, once named, made you think:

“Well… that explains a lot.”

Have you ever noticed parallels between your personal journey and the way you approach money — in business or at home?

I would genuinely love to hear your story.

Because sometimes the greatest cost isn’t failure.

It’s simply not knowing.
